Former Rep. Lazio Looking at N.Y. Gov. Bid

Former Rep. Rick Lazio (R-N.Y.) is again looking at a state-wide campaign, this time for governor in 2010.

Lazio, perhaps best known for his 2000 Senate campaign against then-First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton (D), told The New York Times that he has talked to political advisers about running.

“It’s an honor to be thought of as an attractive candidate,” he told the Times.

If Lazio runs, he could face former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) in a primary. Gov. David Paterson (D-N.Y.) is expected to seek a second term.

Lazio, 50, was a House member from 1993 to 2001. He is currently an executive vice president with J.P. MorganChase & Company. He became the Republican nominee for Senate in 2000 only after Giuliani was diagnosed with cancer and ended his campaign. Lazio lost to Clinton 43 percent to 55 percent.
