The Wilson County sheriff said Monday morning that the suspect in the Sutherland Springs, Texas, mass shooting shot himself after fleeing the scene.

Speaking to “CBS This Morning,” Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt described how the suspect after opening fire on the church left the scene in a vehicle.

Two individuals followed the suspect after he fled, the sheriff said.

“There was some gunfire exchanged I think on the roadway also. And then he wrecked out,” Tackitt said. “And at this time we believe that he had a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Twenty-six people were killed when a suspect opened fire on Sunday at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, which sits east of San Antonio.

Officials have identified the suspect as 26-year-old Devin Kelley.
