Tom Steyer: ‘There is no point in commiserating’

Tom Steyer’s election night started out well enough. 

The Democratic mega-donor was traveling around California meeting with volunteers who had worked for his NextGen America group ahead of the election, supporting candidates and local initiatives. 

But as the results came in, Steyer’s night turned ugly. 

{mosads}“Somewhere around 6:30, we stopped in at Democratic headquarters, and we were watching the TV and we thought, ‘wow, this is going the wrong way,’ ” he said. 

Steyer said his group expected to have an “incredibly good day in California,” where it was backing statewide propositions and local ballot measures, up to three-quarters of which voters adopted. 

But when it became obvious Hillary Clinton was going to lose the presidential election and Democrats would stumble in congressional races, Steyer said, “we got in the car and drove home.”

“There is no point in commiserating. We have zero time to feel sorry for ourselves, and that was our attitude. ‘What’s the next step? Let’s get in the car, let’s going home, let’s think about the next step,’ ” Steyer said.
