Jon Stewart returns to ‘Daily Show’ as ‘Bernie Bernstein’ from Roy Moore robocall

Jon Stewart returned to “The Daily Show” on Thursday night as “Bernie Bernstein,” the fake Washington Post reporter behind robocalls offering payment in return for damaging claims against Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore (R).

Host Trevor Noah began the segment by mocking the phone call that was left on the voicemail of at least one Alabama resident earlier this week.

{mosads}The robocall offered rewards between $5,000 and $7,000 for “a female between the ages of 54 to 57 years old willing to make damaging remarks about candidate Roy Moore.”

“I’m going to go out of a limb and say that this ‘Bernie Bernstein’ is not a real Washington Post reporter,” Noah said.

“I don’t even know what that accent was. It sounded like a guy trying to do a New York Jewish voice based on hearing a friend describe a Woody Allen movie,” he added.

Noah then received a call from a “Bernie Bernstein.”

“It’s the Washington Post reporter Bernie Bernstein, who else should it be,” the caller said.

Noah then went backstage to find Stewart making the phone call.

“I’m a real person, I’m a very Jewish person,” Stewart said as Noah discovered him.

Stewart was on the show to promote hosting the upcoming HBO special “Night of Too Many Stars” to raise funds for autism research.

“You don’t need anti-Semitism to come on the show, you could have just asked me,” Noah said.

“I don’t need it, I just like it that way,” Stewart said.

The robocalls came after The Washington Post published a report earlier this month that featured four women accusing Moore of sexual misconduct, including an allegation that he had a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old girl in 1979, when he was 32.

More women have come forward with similar allegations in the days after the report. Moore has denied the claims.
