Wasserman Schultz: Haitian community stronger and wiser than ‘Trump will ever be’

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) on Saturday slammed President Trump after a report said he suggested that all Haitian immigrants to the U.S. have AIDS.

“We should never respond to the President’s hatred and bigotry with silence. It’s a good thing the Haitian community is far stronger, wiser, and kinder than Donald Trump will ever be,” Schultz tweeted.

The congresswoman’s remarks came after The New York Times reported Saturday that the president suggested Haitian immigrants “all have AIDS” while bemoaning immigration levels in an Oval Office meeting earlier this year.

The publication also reported that the president took aim at Nigerian immigrants as well, saying immigrants from the African country would never “go back to their huts” in Africa after moving to the U.S.

He also reportedly said Afghan immigrants came from a terrorist haven.

The White House denied to the Times that Trump ever used “AIDS” or “huts” to refer to immigrants from any country, while several people present at the meeting said they did not remember the president making the remarks.
