GOP mega-donors cut off funding for Bannon’s security detail: report

The family of GOP mega-donor Robert Mercer reportedly cut off funding for former White House strategist Stephen Bannon’s private security detail amid frustrations over his comments about his possible political ambitions.

An associate of the Mercer family, which has been a steady supporter of Bannon and his political efforts, told The New York Times that they cut the funding for the personal protective detail. The associate said the Mercers were upset after learning that Bannon had privately said that they would support him if he ran for president.

The revelation comes after a rare statement Thursday from Rebekah Mercer, Robert Mercer’s daughter, publicly rebuking Bannon while siding with President Trump amid his feud with the former White House strategist.

An excerpt from author Michael Wolff’s new book “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House” quoted Bannon spurning Trump administration officials and campaign associates, igniting Trump’s anger and prompting the White House to blast the book and its reported details.

Bannon reportedly called an infamous 2016 Trump Tower meeting involving Trump’s oldest son Donald Trump Jr. and a Russian lawyer promising damaging information on Hillary Clinton “treasonous.” President Trump later claimed that Bannon had “lost his mind.”

“I support President Trump and the platform upon which he was elected,” Rebekah Mercer said in a statement Thursday reported by The Washington Post.

“My family and I have not communicated with Steve Bannon in many months and have provided no financial support to his political agenda, nor do we support his recent actions and statements,” Mercer added.

Robert Mercer, who sold stock in Bannon’s website Breitbart News to his daughter, has previously expressed his political differences with Bannon.
