The New York Daily News highlighted contributions that Sens. Marco Rubio (Fla.), Rob Portman (Ohio) and other GOP senators have received from the National Rifle Association (NRA) and other gun rights groups after the senators tweeted about a shooting Wednesday at a Florida high school.

The tweets from the left-leaning New York tabloid highlighted the criticism GOP senators have increasingly come under from proponents of gun control for expressing sorrow over gun violence tragedies while taking money from the NRA.

Rubio tweeted frequent updates on the shooting at the high school in his home state. Authorities say there are at least 17 killed.

“Today is that terrible day you pray never comes,” Rubio tweeted.

The Daily News tweeted that Rubio had taken $90,205 from gun rights advocate groups in the 2015-2016 campaign year.

Portman said the news was “heartbreaking” and that he and his wife Jane “send our prayers to the school, the community, and the victims of this tragedy.”

The Daily News also highlighted his campaign contributions from gun rights groups.

The Daily News also tweeted at Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Pat Toomey (Pa.)
