Florida teacher: Trump deserves ‘detention’ for his response to shooting

A teacher from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School — which recently witnessed a shooting that left 17 people dead — says that Trump deserves two weeks of detention for attacking mentally ill people following the attack.

“Going around, calling people who are mentally ill in our community ‘psychos’ and ‘lunatics,’ that’s not going to solve the problem,” Diane Wolk-Rogers said on CNN. “That actually creates barriers so that people that would want to seek that help aren’t going to get it.”

She said both Trump and Dana Loesch, a spokeswoman for the National Rifle Association, should get detention for “name calling” people with mental health issues.

In a tweet on Thursday, Trump referred to someone who would commit a school shooting as a “sicko.”

{mosads}“So for doing that, I want to give Mr. Trump and Dana a detention. And normally that is name calling, and I give my students one-week detention for name calling,” Wolk-Rogers said. “But because 25 percent of Americans at some time are going to have mental health issues, I am going to make it two weeks and I want them to come after school and write letters of apologies to the people of America.”

At a CNN town hall on gun violence held on Thursday, Loesch referred to the suspect in the shooting as a “monster” and “nuts.”

The Florida school shooting has reignited a national discussion about gun violence in America, with many emphasizing the need to focus on people with mental health issues.

Others have said stigmatizing people with mental health issues is not the best way to address the crisis.

President Trump recently directed the Department of Justice to draft regulations to ban bump stocks, the device that makes weapons shoot at a faster rate.

The students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas have taken an active role in speaking out for gun reform. They have organized school walkouts and are planning a march in Washington, D.C., next month.
