Tom Steyer says Pelosi should stop calling tax savings ‘crumbs’

Democratic mega-donor Tom Steyer said Saturday that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) should stop describing Americans’ savings from Republican-led tax cuts as “crumbs,” because the descriptor could seem insulting.

“Nancy was making a point that was true, but she said it in a way that disparaged the amount of money that they were getting,” Steyer said at the California Democratic Party convention, according to the Washington Examiner.

Republicans have touted raises, bonuses and tax savings sparked by a series of sweeping tax cuts signed into law late last year.

But Pelosi and other Democrats have described the savings for working-class Americans as “crumbs” compared to the savings seen by the wealthiest Americans. 

The tax plan slashed the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 21 percent, and offered more modest cuts to individual tax rates. Those individual tax cuts, however, will expire in less than a decade.

Republicans have gone on the offensive in response, using Pelosi’s descriptor to cast the Democrats as aloof and detached from working-class Americans.

“I think she probably wouldn’t use that word again because they’re trying to use it against her,” Steyer said, according to the Examiner.
