Pelosi: ‘Certainly we are thankful whenever workers get bonuses’

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday clarified her past comments calling bonuses from the GOP tax plan “crumbs,” saying “we are thankful whenever workers get bonuses.”

“Certainly we are thankful whenever workers get bonuses. But it is incredibly telling that companies by-and-large chose to give out one-time bonuses, and not long-term raises,” Pelosi said in a tweet.

Pelosi received backlash last month after she said the bonuses some companies doled out after the tax law’s passage are “crumbs.”

A number of companies, including Starbucks, Home Depot and Disney, have credited the tax law in announcing benefits for their employees, including raises and bonuses.

Republicans seized on the minority leader’s “crumbs” comments in February, saying they portrayed how out of touch Pelosi was with the public.

{mosads}President Trump compared them to former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s past comments calling some Trump voters “deplorables.”

“We got hit with these corporations giving tremendous bonuses to everybody that Nancy Pelosi called crumbs,” the president said last month. “That could be like deplorable, does that make sense? Deplorable and crumbs? Those two words, they seem to have a resemblance. I hope it has the same meaning.”

Pelosi also received pushback from some Democrats.

“Nancy was making a point that was true, but she said it in a way that disparaged the amount of money that they were getting,” Democratic mega-donor Tom Steyer said.

However, Pelosi’s office has said public opinion will ultimately be on their side.

“I think the No. 1 way to know that you’re effective at what you do is to get attacked,” Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said.

Pelosi’s office also pointed to a February poll conducted by American First Priorities, a pro-Trump non-profit, which found that 49 percent of Americans agreed with the minority leader’s initial remarks, despite the blowback from Republicans.
