The Broward County Charter Review Commission is weighing whether to put a ban on assault rifles and high capacity magazines on the county’s November ballot.

The 19-member board in Broward County, Fla. — where a gunman last month opened fire at a high school, killing 17 — is meeting Friday to discuss whether it wants to add certain gun measures to the ballot, The Orlando Sun Sentinel reported.

If 13 people on the board agree, the board can put charter amendments on the ballot.

{mosads}If the board were to put the charter amendments on the ballot, they would be on shaky legal ground because state law bars local officials from enacting their own gun measures. Officials could face steep fines or be removed from office if they violate the law, according to the Sentinel.

The board has previously held public hearings regarding multiple potential charter amendments, the Sentinel reported.

The other measures include banning the sale of items that can turn semi-automatic weapons in automatic weapons and banning gun shows from taking place on property owned by the county.

The push for new gun control measures follows the Feb. 14 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. Fla.

Gun control has become a central issue since the shooting, with students leading the charge to demand that lawmakers implement new gun laws to keep their schools safe.

Students across the country on Wednesday walked our of their schools to protest gun violence and call for change.

The March For Our Lives is also planned for March 24 in Washington, D.C., to demand action.
