NBA star Dwyane Wade on Monday praised the students who survived last month’s mass shooting at a South Florida high school for their calls for action and defended his own efforts to support those affected by the massacre.
“I do more than dribble,” the Miami Heat standout said during an interview on CNN’s “New Day.”
“For me it’s bigger than basketball. It’s bigger than dribbling, and I’ve been given an opportunity to use my voice. I’ve been given an opportunity to stand for so many that cannot.”
Wade also questioned how adults can “move on” knowing that kids are not safe in schools.
“I can’t imagine what these families are dealing with, are going through,” he said. “I try to put myself in that situation and the heartache and the hurt, just even trying to imagine it, is too much to bear.”
Wade earlier this month said he is donating $200,000 to the March for Our Lives fundraiser to support the anti-gun violence rally.
He also dedicated an art exhibit in Miami earlier this month to the victims of the mass shooting and visited Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School to meet with students who survived the shooting.
Gun control has become a central issue since a gunman opened fire at the Parkland, Fla., school, killing 17 people.
Students who survived the shooting have been rallying lawmakers to pass new laws to combat gun violence.
Last week, students across the country walked out of their schools to protest gun violence and call for change. The March for Our Lives is being held Saturday in Washington, D.C., to call for change.
