WATCH: Only Sessions knows if calls for second special counsel effective, Gowdy says
Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) says that while he appreciates top House Republicans calling for a second special counsel to investigate allegations of bias and abuse at the FBI, he’s unsure if it will move Attorney General Jeff Sessions to appoint one.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) have in recent days joined Gowdy and other high-ranking Republicans who have called for Sessions to appoint a second special counsel.
“I’m glad Stevie and Kevin have done it too, but only Attorney General Sessions knows whether it moved him closer to the decision and, if so, which direction,” Gowdy said in an interview with The Hill on Tuesday.
Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) have not endorsed calls for a second probe nor have they criticized special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election.
