Poll: More say GOP tax law is bad idea than good idea

Greg Nash

More people say the GOP tax law is a bad idea than those who say it is a good idea, according to a new poll.

An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds just 27 percent of adults think the GOP tax law is a good idea. A plurality, 36 percent, think the law is a bad idea.

The remainder, 34 percent, said they did not have an opinion on the law.

That is down slightly from the 30 percent of respondents in January who said they thought the law was a good idea.

The recent poll finds that just 6 percent of Democrats think the tax law is a good idea, but a majority of Republicans, 56 percent, think it is a good idea.

The recent poll also finds that a majority, 53 percent, think the tax law will have a negative impact on the economy. Just 39 percent think it will have a positive impact, such as creating a stronger economy and more jobs.

The poll was conducted from April 8-11 among 900 adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.27 percentage points.

A report earlier this month from the Congressional Budget Office said the GOP’s signature tax law is projected to increase the national debt by $1.9 trillion between 2018 and 2028.

According to the report, the tax law would cost the government $2.3 trillion in revenues, but economic growth would offset that figure by about $461 billion.

During the tax debate, some Republicans argued the tax cuts in the bill would pay for themselves.
