Comey: Trump should do interview with Mueller

Former FBI Director James Comey told Axios on Monday that President Trump should do an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election.

“[I]t is hard in almost all investigations to imagine getting to that without some interaction with the subject,” Comey told Axios. “But whether [Mueller] gets it or not, I hope he’s free to get to the truth.”

Comey, who was fired by Trump in May 2017, said that normally the president would be expected to do an interview.

“In a normal world, it would be very hard for the President of the United States not to submit to an interview in connection with an investigation that touches upon … his conduct and that of people around him,” Comey said.

“In a normal world, the American people would find that very, very difficult to accept,” he added.

Comey has done a media blitz recently to promote his book “A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership,” in which he details his interactions with the president and how he says Trump insisted Comey give him his personal “loyalty” while he was director of the FBI.

Comey has said he believes Trump fired him to undermine the Russia investigation.

Trump has said in the past that he is open to being interviewed by the special counsel but, after the FBI raided the office and home of his personal lawyer Michael Cohen, it seems less likely Trump would agree to an interview.
