Waffle House hero’s alma mater establishes scholarship in his name

The man hailed as a hero after wrestling a gun away from a shooter at a Waffle House in Nashville, Tenn., last month is being honored by his alma mater.

Tennessee State University announced Monday night that it had established a scholarship named for James Shaw Jr., with school president Glenda Glover lauding his “bravery and courage.”

The 29-year-old AT&T worker and father has been hailed as a hero after he wrestled a rifle from a gunman at a local Waffle House in late April.

Shaw was inside the eatery when local authorities claim the suspected gunman, Travis Reinking, opened fire with an AR-15, killing four people.

Shaw, who was hiding behind a door near the restaurant’s bathroom, told ABC News that he eyed Reinking as he reloaded his rifle and moved to wrestle the gun away from him.

Local police credited Shaw with saving lives.

Shaw has since set up a GoFundMe page for the families of the victims. As of Wednesday, almost $233,000 has been raised.
