Shep Smith: There’s no evidence to back Trump’s spying claims

Fox News

Fox News host Shepard Smith on Tuesday dismissed President Trump’s unsubstantiated claim that the FBI spied on his campaign using an informant.

“President Trump has also claimed the feds spied on his campaign with an informant. The president calls it ‘spygate,’ ” Smith said during his show “Shepard Smith Reporting.”

“Fox News can confirm it is not. Fox News knows of no evidence to support the president’s claim.”

The president has accused the FBI of spying on his 2016 presidential campaign by using an informant. But no evidence has surfaced to back Trump’s claim.

News reports say that an FBI informant met with three Trump campaign advisers in 2016, but that it was in relation to an investigation into Russia’s meddling in the election.

Smith also denounced a claim Trump made in a tweet early Tuesday, in which he said special counsel Robert Mueller “will be meddling with the mid-term elections.”

“There’s nothing to support that claim and neither the president nor the White House has offered anything to support that claim,” Smith said.

Smith earlier this month described a “concerted effort” to get guests to appear on television networks, including Fox News, to convince the president not to sit down for an interview with Mueller.
