Trump expects letter from Kim Jong Un as summit date nears

President Trump said a North Korean delegation is expected to visit Washington on Friday to deliver a letter from leader Kim Jong Un as both nations scramble to salvage their planned nuclear summit.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday before boarding Air Force One for a trip to Texas, Trump said talks between U.S. and North Korean diplomats are going “very well.”

“They’re going to be coming down to Washington on Friday. And a letter is going to be delivered to me from Kim Jong Un,” he said.

Trump said he is not sure if an agreement is taking shape, but added that the negotiations “are in good hands.”

The president spoke as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was sitting down in New York City with Kim Jong Chol, a top North Korean official and close confidant of Kim.

Trump in March agreed to meet with Kim in an effort to broker a deal over the North’s nuclear program, but the president later pulled out of the talks amid heightened rhetoric from Kim’s government.

Just hours after canceling the meeting, however, Trump indicated he was still open to meeting with Kim and talks resumed after North Korea issued a conciliatory statement.
