58 percent say Trump is intelligent in Gallup poll

A new poll from Gallup finds those surveyed give President Trump high ratings on his intelligence but lower ones for his ability to work with both sides of the political aisle.

Fifty-eight percent of Americans surveyed said they would characterize Trump as intelligent, the Gallup poll found, while 40 percent said they would not characterize him as intelligence.

Gallup said it has not posed the question on intelligence to U.S. voters frequently enough with past presidents to give enough historical context. 

However, the polling giant asked a similar question in the 1990s, regarding former Presidents Clinton and George H.W. Bush. Bush and Clinton scored higher than Trump when voters were asked a similar question about intelligence. 

{mosads}Trump in the new survey also received relatively high marks from Americans for being a decisive leader, with 51 percent saying they would use the term to characterize the president. 

However, the president received lower marks from Americans on his ability to work with Republicans and Democrats. 

Only 31 percent of said Trump “works well with both parties in Washington to get things done,” while 67 percent of those polled said Trump does not work well with both sides of the aisle. 

The poll comes as Trump reaches his one-and-a-half-year mark in office. 

Trump has signaled he will campaign aggressively in the run-up to the 2018 midterm elections, which are widely expected to be a referendum on the first half of his first term in office. 

The Gallup poll was conducted on June 1-13, 2018 among 1,520 adults. Its margin of error is 3 percentage points.
