Secret Service to provide temporary security at Sanders’ home: report

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders is reportedly set to receive additional security at her home on a temporary basis.

NBC News, citing a law enforcement official, first reported Tuesday evening that the Secret Service would provide additional security for the high-profile Trump administration official.

The Secret Service declined to comment to The Hill on the matter.

Sanders has been at the center of a fresh debate over civility in politics after she was refused service at a Virginia restaurant over the weekend.

The co-owner of The Red Hen in Lexington, Va., told The Washington Post that she asked Sanders to leave because of the White House official’s support for President Trump’s policies.

Sanders first addressed the incident through her government Twitter account over the weekend before elaborating on the situation during Monday’s press briefing.

“We are allowed to disagree but we should be able to do so freely and without fear of harm,” she said. “And this goes for all people regardless of politics.”

Sanders was denied service at the Virginia restaurant after a pair of other Trump administration officials — White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen — were confronted by protesters in separate instances last week while they dined at Mexican restaurants.

Those incidents have prompted a broader conversation about the treatment of Trump administration officials.

Rep. Maxine Walters (D-Calif.) escalated tensions when she encouraged supporters to confront Trump administration officials in public places. She later defended her comments, saying she supports peaceful protest and noted that the president has made more explicit threats.

Most Democrats have sought to tamp down the furor surrounding Waters’s comments. They have said harassing political opponents is “not American” and called for peaceful disagreement.

President Trump has seized on the controversy, attacking Waters as “low IQ” and using his Twitter account to suggest that the Red Hen restaurant that denied Sanders service is dirty.
