Public opinion analyst: Polling has become about celebrities

Public opinion analyst Karlyn Bowman said on Wednesday that the polling industry has focused on celebrities, such as former White House aide and reality TV star Omarosa Manigault Newman.

“I do think that polling has become about celebrities, so we’re going to probably hear about Omarosa in the next couple of weeks from the major pollsters,” Bowman, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, told Hill.TV’s Joe Concha on “What America’s Thinking.”

“That’s really too bad because that’s not what we want to be concentrating on,” she continued.

Manigault Newman has been in a public feud with President Trump while promoting her new memoir, “Unhinged: An Insider’s Account of the Trump White House.”

The former White House aide released two audio recordings from her time at the White House, one of which she says was recorded in the Situation Room with chief of staff John Kelly, in which he can be heard firing her.

The second recording is what appears to be a private phone call between President Trump and Manigault Newman in which Trump says he was unaware she had been fired.

The director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, Lee Miringoff, said he believed the released recordings could ultimately have the biggest impact.

“Tapes can matter because you can hear the voice of Donald Trump. It’s always a question as to how much it will matter,” Miringoff told Concha.
