NFL ‘shocked and deeply saddened’ after shooting at video game tournament

The NFL said it was “shocked and deeply saddened” after a gunman opened fire during a tournament for the Madden video game in Jacksonville, Fla.

“We are shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific tragedy today in Jacksonville. Our hearts go out to all those affected,” the league said in a Sunday statement.

“We are grateful for the first responders immediately on the scene. We support our partners at EA Sports and will continue to monitor developments with local law enforcement,” the statement continued.

Several people died during the shooting in downtown Jacksonville, according to multiple reports. Authorities have not released an official tally of the fatalities. 

The suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, The Associated Press reported.

Multiple reports said the shooting took place during a Madden NFL 19 Tournament at the GLHF Game Bar. In video on the livestreaming site Twitch, multiple gunshots can be heard.

President Trump has been briefed on the shooting and is monitoring the situation, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement Sunday.
