Pollster: Undecided independents unlikely to vote

NOW PLAYING

Pollster Dan Cox said on Thursday that independent voters, who are undecided at this point in the midterm campaign, are unlikely to come out and vote in November.

“I think there’s a chance those 38 percent of independents don’t turn out at all. If you haven’t made up your mind at this point, there’s been so much information,” Cox told Hill.TV’s Joe Concha on “What America’s Thinking,” referring to the latest American Barometer survey.

“People feel pretty strongly about this president and the direction of the country, rightly or wrongly,” he continued.

“So I think for folks who are already independent, which they tend to vote at lower rates than Democrats or Republicans, and they don’t really know where they’re going to go, at this point they may go nowhere,” he said.

The poll, conducted by Hill.TV and the HarrisX polling company found that 38 percent of independents said they were unsure when asked whether they would vote for a Republican or Democratic candidate in their district.

Republicans and Democrats appeared to have made up their minds on who they would vote for on the generic ballot, with 83 percent of GOP voters saying they would for a Republican candidate, and 94 percent of Democrats saying they would support a candidate from their own party.

Only 8 percent of Republicans said they were unsure, and 4 percent of Democrats said the same.
