Conservative activist: Kavanaugh accuser’s claim ‘unprovable’

Conservative activist Gary Bauer said Friday that the claim that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted a woman decades ago is “unprovable,” accusing Democrats of trying to take down a “good and decent man.”

Bauer, a former president of the conservative Family Research Council, said that Kavanaugh’s accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, could not prove her assault allegations, which he said contradicted other testaments to the judge’s character.

{mosads}”Look ladies and gentleman, I don’t know her. I don’t know her values,” Bauer said at the Values Voter Summit, an annual conservative gathering in Washington, D.C.

“But what she’s saying is unproven and I would argue it’s unprovable. There’s reason why most laws and most crimes have statutes of limitations,” he added. “We can’t prove what she said. But there is something we can prove and that is Judge Kavanaugh’s character.”

Bauer later added: “[Democrats] don’t even care what happened 36 years ago. This is about stopping one good and decent man.”

Ford’s allegations that Kavanaugh pinned her down and groped her during party while the two were in high school have upended the timeline of the judge’s confirmation process.

Kavanaugh has denied the allegations.

Lawmakers on the Senate Judiciary Committee have called on Ford to testify before the committee on Monday.

Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) had set a 10 a.m. Friday deadline for Ford to say whether she will appear before the panel. Ford’s lawyer said in an email to Judiciary Committee staff on Thursday that the Friday deadline for a prepared copy of her testimony and the Monday hearing was a “non-starter.”

“She wishes to testify, provided that we can agree on terms that are fair and which ensure her safety,” the attorney, Debra Katz, wrote.
