Poll: Walker trails challenger by 7 points in Wisconsin

Incumbent Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) trails his challenger by 7 points in a Reuters poll released Wednesday.

State schools superintendent Tony Evers (D) holds a lead in the poll, with 50 percent of respondents saying they’d back him and 43 percent backing Walker.

Walker was first elected governor of Wisconsin in 2010, and unsuccessfully launched a presidential bid in 2016.{mosads}

Trump narrowly defeated Hillary Clinton in Wisconsin in 2016, becoming the first Republican presidential candidate to win the state since Ronald Reagan in 1984.

The president endorsed Walker in August, but according to a poll from earlier in September he has a negative approval rating among registered voters in the state, with 42 percent approving of his job performance and 54 percent disapproving.

The poll surveyed 1,109 likely voters between Sept. 14 and 24. The margin of error is 3 points.
