Ryan: Trump said he would sign funding bill, averting government shutdown
President Trump has given Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) assurances that he will sign a bill to fund the federal government, Ryan said Wednesday, even as the president has threatened a government shutdown if he doesn’t get money for his border wall.
“This funds our military. This funds opioids [programs]. This funds a lot of things that we all want to accomplish together,” Ryan told reporters in the Capitol. “We’ve had very good conversations with the president.”
Asked if Trump told him he would sign the funding bill, Ryan replied, “Yes.”
{mosads}The House will vote Wednesday on a funding package that provides money for the Pentagon, as well as the departments of Education, Labor and Health and Human Services.
The package also includes more than $7 billion in disaster aid for victims of Hurricane Florence, which hit the Carolinas and parts of Virginia earlier this month.
If the package is not signed into law by the Sept. 30 deadline, those parts of the government will shut down.
Trump already signed into law legislation that funded other parts of the government. And congressional Republicans think it would be disastrous for the GOP if Trump shuts down the government just weeks before the November midterm elections.
But Trump has threatened to veto the next funding bill if it does not include billions of dollars for his proposed wall along the U.S-Mexico border. The bipartisan funding deal does not include that money for the wall, which has infuriated the president.
“I want to know, where is the money for Border Security and the WALL in this ridiculous Spending Bill, and where will it come from after the Midterms?” Trump tweeted last week. “Dems are obstructing Law Enforcement and Border Security. REPUBLICANS MUST FINALLY GET TOUGH!”
