Hirono advises Dems to focus on midterms instead of impeaching Kavanaugh

Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) said Sunday that Democrats should be focused on the midterms rather than the possibility of impeaching Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, despite calls on the left to do so.

“I’m much more focused on the here and now, which is that we have an election coming up,” Hirono told CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“I said to the women who are justifiably angry, but determined, and I said they should be just focused like a laser beam on the elections, because they have connected the dots,” Hirono added.

“They know that the senators who are making these confirmation decisions are the people who were elected by their voters,” Hirono said. “And so, as voters, they have a role to play.”

{mosads}Hirono echoed sentiments from Sen. Christopher Coons (D-Del.), who said on Sunday that it was “premature” for Democrats to discuss re-investigating or impeaching Kavanaugh if they take back the Senate in the November midterms.

“Frankly, we are just less than a month away from an election,” Coons told NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“There’s only ever been one justice that’s been impeached and I think talking about it at this point isn’t necessarily healing us and moving us forward,” he said.

Some House Democrats, such as Rep. Jerrold Nadler (N.Y.), have been talking about investigating Kavanaugh if the Democrats flip Congress.

Nadler, who is up for chairman of the House Judiciary Committee if Democrats take the House, said last week that his party “would have to investigate any credible allegations certainly of perjury and other things that haven’t properly been looked into before.”

“If he is on the Supreme Court and the Senate hasn’t investigated, then the House will have to,” he added.
