Kim Schrier will fill retiring Rep. Dave Reichert’s (R-Wash.) seat in Congress after taking down Republican Dino Rossi in Washington’s 8th Congressional District.
Schrier finished second to Rossi in the nonpartisan primary, which saw the top two candidates move on to the general election regardless of party, before winning the general election.
Schrier has been a pediatrician in her community for 16 years. She said she focused on a career in health care after being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes as a teenager.
She has noted that while there are 16 doctors in the current Congress, none of them are women, and has vowed to be an important voice on women’s health issues.
Schrier received her bachelor’s degree from University of California Berkeley, where she studied astrophysics and was in the Phi Beta Kappa honor society.
She is also fluent in Spanish and has worked to help the Latino community in her state.
