GM workers at Canadian plant walk off in protest after company announces cuts

Workers walked off the job at a General Motors plant in Oshawa, Ontario, after GM announced on Monday that the facility might be closed as part of almost 15,000 job cuts.

“Workers decided to walk off the job in protest after learning @GM has no product for them to make after 2019,” tweeted Unifor, a Canadian union. “@Uniforlocal222 members feel betrayed.”

The union included video of workers exiting the building.

{mosads}”Everybody’s just walking out because everybody heard that GM is announcing a closure,” said one man in the video. “That’s totally unfair because we still have a contract until 2020.”

GM announced that it is going to close as many as five auto manufacturing plants in North America, including one in Oshawa.

The other four are located in Maryland, Michigan and Ohio.

A GM spokesperson declined to comment when asked about the workers’ decision to walk out of the plant.
