Biden campaign launches ad ahead of G20 highlighting his trip to Kyiv
President Biden’s reelection campaign dropped a new ad highlighting his leadership on the global stage amid the war in Ukraine, ahead of Biden’s trip to the Group of 20 (G20) summit in India.
The one-minute spot outlines Biden’s surprise and historic visit to Kyiv in February. The ad will run on CBS’s “60 Minutes” on Sunday in battleground states, including Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, while Biden is at the summit.
“It was the first time in modern history … that an American president went into a war zone not controlled by the United States,” the ad says.
“He entered Ukraine under the cover of night, and in the morning, Joe Biden walked shoulder to shoulder with our allies in the war-torn streets, standing up for democracy in a place where a tyrant is waging war to take it away,” the ad says, showing a photograph of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The ad includes photographs and videos of Biden’s overnight trip into Ukraine and his visit on the ground with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“In the middle of a war zone, Joe Biden showed the world what America is made of — that’s the quiet strength of a true leader who doesn’t back down to a dictator,” the ad reads.
It aims to draw a contrast between Biden’s commitment to democracy and the “MAGA Republicans’ dangerous foreign policy positions, including siding with Putin over the Ukrainian people,” according to the Biden campaign.
The president has worked throughout the war in Ukraine to display his leadership on the world stage and push the idea that the U.S. is leading Western allies in helping Ukraine resist Russia.
Biden is set to leave for the G20 later Thursday.
The ad is part of the Biden campaign’s 16-week, $25 million advertising campaign to reach voters in battleground states.
It comes amid a series of disappointing polls for the president.
His approval rating dropped to 39 percent in the latest CNN survey, the lowest in CNN polls this year. The same survey showed that more than half of Democrats are “seriously concerned” about Biden’s age heading into next year.
