Trudeau is stuck in India thanks to broken airplane

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Canadian delegation were forced to stay in India for another night Sunday after their plane experienced technical difficulties while trying to leave the Group of 20 (G20) summit, according to the prime minister’s office.  

“Upon our departure for the airport, we were made aware by the Canadian Armed Forces that CFC001 was experiencing technical issues,” the prime minister’s officer said in a statement shared with The Hill. “These issues are not fixable overnight, our delegation will be staying in India until alternate arrangements are made.”

Trudeau arrived in India on Friday, where several member states of the G20 gathered in New Delhi. 

Trudeau met with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, where Modi emphasized India’s concerns over “anti-India activities of extremist elements” in Canada, according to a statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs.  

“The nexus of such forces with organized crime, drug syndicates and human trafficking should be a concern for Canada as well,” the ministry said. 

The ministry said Modi maintained India-Canada relations have “shared democratic values, respect for rule of law and strong people-to-people ties.” 

Modi’s criticism comes on the heels of Canada’s announcement last week that a judge would lead a public inquiry into whether China, Russia, India and other countries interfered in Canadian federal elections in 2019 and 2021 that reelected Trudeau.
