Hoyer: Trump decision on Syria ‘irresponsible and dangerous’

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) on Thursday called President Trump’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria “impulsive, irresponsible and dangerous.”

“And I would hope that the president would reconsider. The only people happy today about this decision in my opinion are the Syrians, the Iranians, the Russians and ISIS and its allies,” Hoyer added during an interview on CNN’s “New Day.”

Trump on Wednesday announced that the U.S. would remove troops from Syria, claiming the U.S. had defeated the Islamic State in the region.

But Hoyer said Thursday that Trump’s decision will only encourage ISIS.

“It was a terrible decision that puts our country in a bad spot, but more importantly puts some of our allies, like the Kurds, in a very terrible spot,” he said.

“And it encourages ISIS. It doesn’t defeat ISIS,” Hoyer added.

The move has also been criticized by a number of Senate Republicans, including Marco Rubio (Fla.), Lindsey Graham (S.C.) and Bob Corker (Tenn.).

Graham, usually a staunch ally of Trump, called it an “Obama-like mistake” while Corker said the decision was “in many ways even worse” than former President Barack Obama’s decision to withdraw from Iraq.
