Kim Kardashian West thanks Trump for criminal justice reform

Kim Kardashian West is praising President Trump for signing a criminal justice reform bill, saying it shows “what true bipartisanship can accomplish.”

The 39-year-old reality TV star tweeted to her more than 59 million Twitter followers on Thursday:

Trump signed the First Step Act last month. The legislation reduces mandatory minimum sentences in certain instances and expands on “good time credits” for well-behaved prisoners looking for shorter sentences.

{mosads}Kardashian West has been a vocal proponent of criminal justice reform — she discussed the issue in a meeting at the White House in September. The “Keeping up With the Kardashians” star and tabloid fixture also met with Trump last year to urge him to commute the sentence of Alice Marie Johnson, who was serving a life sentence for a nonviolent drug offense and money laundering charges.

Trump granted Johnson clemency shortly after that meeting.

Kardashian West’s husband, rapper Kanye West, has drawn the ire of critics as an outspoken supporter of Trump. Earlier this week, the “Yeezus” performer tweeted multiple pro-Trump messages, writing, “Trump all day.”

Kardashian West — who indicated in 2016 that she was voting for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton — said before meeting with Trump, she considered the potential for backlash from opponents of the commander in chief.

“When I outweighed the options of bad stories about me that would probably last a week in this news cycle, versus saving someone’s life, that wasn’t an option,” Kardashian West said in a November interview with CNN’s Van Jones. “I will gladly go there and take the heat. OK, if he’s gonna listen to me and he’s taking the meeting, maybe I can really get through to him and really explain to him. From meeting all of the people that I have met behind bars, I guarantee you, they don’t care who signs that clemency paper.”
