US, North Korean officials have discussed location of next Trump-Kim summit: report

North Korean and U.S. officials have met multiple times to discuss the location of the next summit between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Reuters reported on Monday, citing a South Korean newspaper report. 

Officials with the U.S. State Department have reportedly met with their North Korean counterparts in Hanoi, Vietnam, several times, indicating Vietnam could be the site for a second Trump-Kim summit, Munhwa Ilbo reported, according to Reuters.

{mosads}The news of the meetings emerges after Trump on Sunday told reporters that the U.S. is “negotiating a location” for a meeting between the two leaders.

“It will be announced probably in the not too distant future,” Trump said. “They do want to meet and we want to meet and we’ll see what happens.”

The previous summit, which was the first-ever meeting between a U.S. president and North Korean leader, was held in June in Singapore. 

Trump said that as the meeting is negotiated, sanctions against North Korea will continue “in full force and effect,” CNN reported. 

North Korea experts have questioned whether Kim has followed through on promises he made during the first summit to dismantle key parts of his nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs. 

Satellite images and intelligence have indicated that North Korea has continued to expand some elements of its nuclear weapons arsenal. 

Progress on North Korea’s denuclearization has stalled since the Trump-Kim meeting, with both sides declining to make concessions.
