China urges end to ‘groundless fabrications’ about Huawei
China on Monday called on other countries to end “groundless fabrications and unreasonable restrictions” against technology giant Huawei.
“We urge relevant parties to cease the groundless fabrications and unreasonable restrictions toward Huawei and other Chinese companies, and create a fair, good and just environment for mutual investment and normal cooperation by both sides’ companies,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said, according to Reuters.
{mosads}“Using security reasons to hype, obstruct or restrict normal cooperation between companies in the end will only hurt one’s own interests,” Hua added.
The demand came after Karol Okonski, a Poland government officials, told Reuters on Sunday that the country could ban the use of Huawei products by state entities following the arrest of a Huawei employee in Poland on accusations of spying.
Hua, speaking at a news briefing Monday, said China hoped it could maintain its relations with Poland, according to Reuters.
Huawei has faced increased scrutiny in recent months, including from the U.S.
The Trump administration, which has banned government use of Huawei products, has accused the tech firm of working for the Chinese government and having the ability to spy on U.S. citizens.
President Trump has also reportedly considered signing an executive order that would extend the ban on using Huawei equipment to U.S. companies.
Additionally, an executive for Huawei in December was arrested in Canada at the request of U.S. authorities. The executive, Meng Wanzhou, currently remains in Canada as she awaits possible extradition to the U.S.
