House GOP nominates Jordan for Speaker: recap
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) won the Republican nod for Speaker in the conference’s second such vote this week.
He beat challenger Rep. Austin Scott (R-Ga.).
Jordan lost earlier in the week to Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who bowed out late Thursday when it became apparent he would not garner the 217 votes needed to earn the gavel. Internal division and opposition led to his withdrawal, coming just a day after he won the party’s nomination.
Without a Speaker since Oct. 5, when Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was removed, the House is unable to push through legislation as war breaks out in Israel and the clock ticks closer to a Nov. 17 government funding deadline.
