Christie: Trump should be ‘desperately worried’ after Meadows granted immunity

GOP presidential candidate Chris Christie said former President Trump should be concerned after former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows reportedly secured an immunity deal to testify before a grand jury in the election interference case.

“Desperately worried,” Christie told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer when asked how worried Trump should be after the ABC News report.

“If the person you call the next James Baker is now testifying that you were lying to the American people about the election results from election night forward, which is reportedly what Mark Meadows is testifying, and that you knew all along that what you were saying was not backed up by the facts, Donald Trump is in very, very big trouble,” Christie added.

ABC News reported on the deal struck between Meadows and special counsel Jack Smith on Tuesday. The outlet said the former chief of staff testified before a grand jury empaneled to hear evidence in the case on at least three separate occasions.

He reportedly told the grand jury that after the 2020 election, he consistently advised Trump that his claims of widespread fraud were baseless. If true, this would contradict what the former president has argued since he lost the election to President Biden.

Christie said the “walls are closing in” on Trump with this news, coupled with his former lawyers who have taken plea deals in the Georgia election case.

“And Mark Meadows was, as you know well, Donald Trump’s shadow the entire time he was chief of staff,” the former New Jersey governor said. “He will know every conversation, every lie, every illegal action that was taken by Donald Trump. And, he’s gonna be able to testify to it.”

Jenna Ellis became the third former Trump campaign attorney to make a plea agreement with prosecutors in the case Tuesday. Scott Hall, a former bail bond business owner, also reached a plea agreement with prosecutors in the case.

Christie warned these latest developments could turn Republican voters away from Trump in the New Hampshire and Iowa primaries. However, Trump has maintained a strong lead in the polls and remains the Republican Party’s front-runner in the 2024 race.
