GM hourly workers to get $10,750 profit-sharing check

General Motors’ hourly workers will get profit-sharing checks of up to $10,750 this year, the company announced Wednesday. 

Roughly 46,500 employees will be eligible for the payments.

“When GM delivers good business results, our eligible hourly employees in the U.S. share in the company’s success,” GM CEO Mary Barra said in a statement. “To build on our performance, we must continue working together to deliver strong safety, quality and productivity results.”

{mosads}The announcement came as part of GM’s 2018 earnings report, which revealed the auto manufacturer made $10.8 billion in pre-tax profits in North America.

GM began the process of laying off 4,000 salaried workers this month. The company announced in November it was planning on cutting 15 percent of its workforce, approximately 15,000 people, and was met with bipartisan criticism.

“We are now looking at cutting all @GM subsidies, including… for electric cars,” President Trump tweeted in November, adding that he was “very disappointed.”

“This decision is corporate greed at its worst,” Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown (D) said in a November statement.

GM announced in December that they would be offering factory jobs at other locations for some 2,700 workers at plants that are being shut down.  

The United Automobile Workers union sued GM in January, accusing them of hiring part time workers instead of transferring laid-off employees.

GM has declined to directly comment on the lawsuit.
