Ocasio-Cortez: Superhero portrayal shows ‘we all have a superhero inside of us’
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said she is honored that she is being portrayed in a new comic book, saying her depiction allows young girls of color to see a superhero who looks like them.
“It’s incredibly humbling. If I can be that for a little girl somewhere where she can see herself being a superhero, I think that’s important for us to see we all have a superhero inside of us,” she told TMZ Wednesday.
{mosads}“I’m especially honored that they’re donating the proceeds to Raices Texas for immigration and civil rights protections. So that part of the project, if it can benefit communities that need it, is really amazing,” she added, referring to a non-profit that provides legal services to immigrants and refugees.
Devil’s Due Comics announced last week that it had put together a team to create the “mother of all one-off commemorative comics: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez And The Freshman Force. Issue #1, New Party: Who Dis?”
In the comic, Ocasio-Cortez will “engage in a series of super-heroic mini-adventures, taking on the GOP establishment from within.”
The book is slated for release on May 15.
Ocasio-Cortez shot to national prominence last year when she unseated 10-term Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.) in the primary. She immediately made waves when arriving on Capitol Hill, advocating for the Democratic party to adopt progressive policies such as the Green New Deal and a 70 percent marginal tax rate on income above $10 million.
“It’s no secret that AOC has been made the unofficial leader of the new school and has sparked new life into Washington,” said Josh Blaylock, the publisher of Devil’s Due Comics, referring to Ocasio-Cortez. “And that’s reflected in the enthusiasm we received from so many contributing artists.”
