Ex-White House counsel McGahn says he’s rejoining major law firm

Former White House counsel Don McGahn will rejoin his longtime law firm, he confirmed to The Washington Post on Sunday.

McGahn, who departed the White House in October, said he will be rejoining Jones Day sometime this month.

“I enjoy the practice of law and I look forward to coming back to Jones Day,” McGahn said in an interview with the Post.

{mosads}“I’m just going to practice law. No paid corporate speeches and no books, unlike some others who have worked in the White House.”

The Hill has reached out to Jones Day for confirmation.

McGahn played a key role in the Trump administration in picking judicial appointees and shepherding them through the process.

He played a particularly large role in the confirmations of Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told the Post that McGahn will remain involved with the nomination process.

“We keep in touch and talk from time to time,” McConnell said. “Some would argue we were co-conspirators going back to the 2016 campaign, where we worked on the number one priority I had and the president had.”

Two Senate GOP aides told the Post that McGahn has recently reached out to lawmakers to boost Neomi Rao, Trump’s nominee to replace Kavanaugh on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

McGahn first joined Jones Day in 2014. In his soon-to-begin stint, the lawyer will lead the firm’s government regulation practice as a partner.
