Trump accuses Nadler of harassment in wide-ranging probe

President Trump on Tuesday attacked Democratic Rep. Jerrold Nadler (N.Y.), accusing the House Judiciary Committee chairman of attempting to “harass” his associates in a wide-ranging probe into Trump’s administration, campaign and businesses.

The president also referenced House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), who on Monday made a sweeping request for documents and interviews related to Trump’s conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump said Democrats are ramping up their investigations “now that they realize the only Collusion with Russia was done by Crooked Hillary Clinton & the Democrats.”

Tuesday’s tweet is the latest sign the president is taking a more forceful tone against Nadler and other Democrats, who are using their newly found power in the House to besiege the White House with investigations.

Nadler on Monday issued requests for information from 81 people or entities related to Trump. Among those who have been targeted by the committee are President Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner, his son Donald Trump Jr., Vice President Pence and others.

The White House on Monday night issued a blistering statement, accusing Nadler of having political motives in opening a “disgraceful and abusive investigation” into allegations of obstruction of justice, corruption and abuses of power. 

“The Democrats are more interested in pathetic political games and catering to a radical, leftist base than on producing results for our citizens,” said press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. “The Democrats are not after the truth, they are after the president.”

Earlier on Monday, Trump suggested he might cooperate with the investigation, telling reporters, “I cooperate all the time with everybody.”

But the latest statements suggest the White House could invoke executive privilege or take other steps to block Democrats from obtaining information related to the inner workings of the West Wing.
