Ocasio-Cortez responds to Trump calling her a ‘young bartender’: The ‘last guy who underestimated me lost’
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) responded Wednesday to President Trump’s recent remarks in which he referred to her as a “young bartender.”
“[The] last guy who underestimated me lost,” she told Newsweek. “That’s all I gotta say about that.”
{mosads}Ocasio-Cortez, a former bartender, defeated longtime incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in the 2018 Democratic primary for her New York House seat and went on to beat Republican Anthony Pappas in the general election.
President Trump on Tuesday mocked Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal proposal during a fundraising dinner for the National Republican Congressional Committee.
“The Green New Deal, done by a young bartender, 29 years old,” Trump said.
“A young bartender, wonderful young woman,” he added. “The Green New Deal. The first time I heard it I said, ‘That’s the craziest thing.’ You have senators that are professionals that you guys know that have been there for a long time … and they’re standing behind her shaking. They’re petrified of her.”
Trump has repeatedly gone after Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal, saying that it’s an idea he hopes to campaign against. Earlier this year, Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) introduced the legislation, which aims to create an economy based on 100 percent renewable energy.
The Senate blocked the measure last week in a vote Democrats say was scheduled for show.
