Conservative lawyer George Conway criticized a reported call made by former President Trump and Republican National Committee chair (RNC) Ronna McDaniel to two Michigan canvassers after the 2020 election Friday, calling it “corrupt.”

“It’s crazy and corrupt,” Conway said on MSNBC Friday. “And I gotta say this about my former political party, you know, I mean, Ronna Romney McDaniel, the woman who changed her name, so that wouldn’t displease Donald Trump, I mean.”

“I mean, this is just the sleaziest thing ever, whether or not it’s criminal, we’ll set that aside. It’s just the sleaziest thing ever, and if my former political party had any decency or shame, she’d be out on her ass,” Conway continued.

In the aforementioned call, the former president reportedly pressured Wayne County canvassers Monica Palmer and William Hartmann to not sign the certification of the 2020 election, according to recordings obtained by The Detroit News. McDaniel was also reportedly involved in the call.

“We’ve got to fight for our country,” Trump said on the recordings, per the Detroit newspaper. “We can’t let these people take our country away from us.”

The canvassers were in a vehicle when they accepted the call from the then-president. Other people came into the vehicle and could have heard the conversation, Palmer acknowledged to the News.

“If you can go home tonight, do not sign it. … We will get you attorneys,” McDaniel was recorded saying, according to the local outlet.

McDaniel also said she stood by a letter she and Michigan Republican Party Chair Laura Cox wrote that urged the Michigan Board of State Canvassers to conduct an audit prior to the election results being certified, the News reported.

“What I said publicly and repeatedly at the time, as referenced in my letter on Nov. 21, 2020, is that there was ample evidence that warranted an audit,” McDaniel said to the News in a statement.
