Political editor Sophia Tesfaye said in an interview that aired Tuesday on Hill.TV’s “What America’s Thinking” that there is evidence showing a bipartisan acknowledgment of the wealth gap in the U.S.
“There’s plenty of polling out there that does show that Democrats and Republicans understand that there is a wealth gap going on,” Tesfaye, deputy politics editor at Salon.com, told host Jamal Simmons on Monday.
“Whether or not they think income or economic inequality is a problem, they do think that the wealthy are not paying their fair share, whatever that is determined to mean, and that they are in favor of raising of raising taxes on the wealthy,” she continued.
“So I think that’s maybe one way they manifest their desires to have more of an equitable society without saying that America is no longer an equal society,” she said.
Addressing the wealth gap has become a major issue in the Democratic presidential primary, with Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) proposing higher taxes on wealthy Americans.
A Politico–Morning Consult poll released in February found 61 percent of voters said they supported taxes on high levels of wealth.
