DGA poll shows Pearce’s best option is Congress

A Democratic Governors Association (DGA) poll shows New Mexico Lt. Gov. Diane Denish (D) leading two former members of Congress by 22 points apiece in her state’s 2010 governor’s race.

Denish leads former Reps. Heather Wilson (R) and Steve Pearce (R) both by the same count: 57-35.

The gubernatorial implications aside, it could provide some insight into Pearce’s decision-making process. Pearce has been weighing whether to run for governor or for his old 2nd district House seat, which Democrat Harry Teague won in an open-seat race last year.

After getting dusted 61-39 by fellow Rep. Tom Udall (D-N.M.) in the state’s Senate race last year, it’s hard to see Pearce wanting to enter another statewide race where he trails by the same amount to start out with.

Running for his old House seat sure seems like a better option.

(Thanks to Heath Haussamen’s great blog for posting the memo to the web.)
