Nadler leaves door open to impeaching Trump

Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) on Sunday did not rule out beginning impeachment proceedings against President Trump.

Nadler, who is chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that Congress will have to receive an unredacted copy of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report and hear from Mueller and Attorney General William Barr before reaching a determination on impeachment.

“Some of this would be impeachable,” Nadler said, referring to Trump’s actions laid out in Mueller’s report. “Obstruction of justice, if proven, would be impeachable,” he added.

Mueller declined make a determination on possible obstruction of justice by Trump, concluding that the evidence did not reach a threshold to charge the president with obstruction. 

The special counsel, however, wrote in his report that his team probed 10 “episodes” of potential obstruction of justice, leaving the door open to possible congressional probes of Trump’s conduct.{mosads}

Mueller’s report says Trump tried on multiple occasions to thwart Mueller’s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election, including ordering then-White House counsel Don McGahn to fire Mueller in 2017.

House Democrats on Thursday and Friday seized on Mueller’s findings on obstruction, with Nadler issuing a subpoena Friday morning for the special counsel’s unredacted report.

Earlier Sunday, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said Democrats “may” bring impeachment proceedings.
