Democratic strategist Estuardo Rodriguez criticized President Trump’s recent meeting with CEO Jack Dorsey, saying it was a “wasted opportunity” to talk more about Twitter’s platform.
“The overall numbers across social media and the voters that are going to matter for 2020 — they’re not necessarily on Twitter,” Rodriguez, a principal at the Raben Group, told Hill.TV during a panel discussion Wednesday.
“If he’s going to worry about those numbers, let him,” Rodriguez said, referring to Trump. “But at the end of the day we have to constantly find new ways to be communicating with our electorate.”
“The Trump meeting was a wasted opportunity to talk to this CEO about what that platform does, but there are so many platforms that have a responsibility,” he added.
Rodriguez’s comments come after reports surfaced that Trump spent much of his meeting with Dorsey on Tuesday complaining about his Twitter account.
According to The Washington Post, the president said he believed the social media platform was deliberately removing his followers and that his fellow conservatives were also losing followers.
Trump and Republicans have long accused tech companies like Twitter of being biased against conservatives. Twitter has denied the allegations.
“They don’t treat me well as a Republican,” Trump tweeted before his meeting with Dorsey. “Very discriminatory, hard for people to sign on. Constantly taking people off list.”
A Twitter spokesman called the meeting “constructive,” and Trump said he looks forward to “keeping an open dialogue.”
