GOP pollster B.J. Martino said Wednesday that it’s important to listen to young Republicans on how big of a role government should play in society.
Martino told Hill.TV’s Jamal Simmons that young Republicans are “a little bit more likely” than older generations to say that the government “has some sort of role” in addressing societal issues.
“We have to begin to become comfortable with, as a party, understanding what is that appropriate role?” Martino said on “What America’s Thinking.”
“[A] traditional no-government role, or making government as small as possible, may not be the answer these young Republicans want to hear, or the way they want to take our party.”
“They want an efficient government,” he continued. “They want an effective government that addresses some of these problems.”
A Pew Research survey, released in January, found that millennial and Generation Z Republicans were more likely than their older counterparts to say the government should do more to solve problems.
Fifty-two percent of Gen Z Republicans and 38 percent of millennial Republicans polled said the government should do more to solve problems, while 29 percent of Gen X Republicans and 23 percent of baby boomer Republicans agreed.
