2020 Dems would benefit from running as outsiders, says GOP pollster

Republican pollster Conor Maguire said in an interview that aired Tuesday on “What America’s Thinking” that 2020 Democratic contenders could benefit from campaigning as political outsiders.

“You do see this kind of outsider run that we’ll see,” Maguire, a senior strategist at WPA Intelligence, told host Jamal Simmons on Monday.

“Donald Trump ran on that quite a bit, draining the swamp, making changes, doing things differently with trade, and he has,” he continued.

“I think that’s kind of a really a great way to kind of penetrate into the market, to actually get people to listen to you,” he said.

“If someone on the Democratic side in the presidential kind of goes that same route, I could see that working as well to kind of differentiate themselves,” he said.

Former Vice President Joe Biden, who is largely seen as an establishment candidate, is leading the Democratic pack. But he faces strong competition from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a self-described democratic socialist who has campaigned as more of an anti-establishment force.

A Hill-HarrisX survey released on Monday showed 46 percent of Democratic and Democratic-leaning independents polled saying Biden should be the party’s 2020 nominee.

Sanders came in second place at 14 percent.
