YouTube star sentenced to jail after toothpaste-filled Oreo prank
A YouTuber, who filmed himself giving a homeless man toothpaste-filled Oreos as a prank, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison and fined 20,000 euros for the incident.
Kanghua Ren, the face behind the ReSet YouTube account, was found guilty by a Barcelona court of violating the homeless man’s moral integrity, The New York Times reports.
But the Times noted that Ren will likely avoid having to serve in jail since prison sentences of less than two years for first-time offenders can be suspended in Spain.
{mosads}Ren’s YouTube and other social media accounts were also ordered by the court to be shut down for five years, according to the Times.
When Ren was 19 years old, he posted a since-deleted video of himself in 2017, removing the white Oreo cookie cream and replacing it with toothpaste. He then gave the Oreo and a 20 euro bill to a homeless man, who vomited after he ate the cookie.
The video received significant backlash after it went online, and Ren later went to the homeless man again and offered him another 20 euro bill. Police say he also offered the man’s daughter 300 euros in exchange for not filing a lawsuit, according to the Times.
In the original video, Ren said the prank “may have gone a bit far,” but added that it “will help clean his teeth — I don’t think he has cleaned them since he became poor.”
Ren has continued to upload to YouTube since the court’s ruling. In his latest video, he defended himself and cautioned his viewers not to listen to everything they hear or read.
